Under the Jacob Wetterling Act of 1994, local law enforcement in Texas and all over the US are to be informed when a person convicted of sex crimes against a child has any sort of change of address. The purpose of the law is to provide information to communities through a sex offender registration and community notification. The idea is that parents should be able to protect their children more carefully by knowing that a sexual offender lives nearby. The Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act creates additional registration requirements to Megan’s Law where sexual offenders are organized into different levels of offenders and each tier has different registration requirements that are punishable as a felony. It also creates a national sex offender registry and the information is accessible online. The importance of this law was to create consistency among states in terms of tracking sex offenders.
These laws serve an important purpose in child protection in the United States because parents are made more aware of potentially dangerous people in their neighborhoods.
